Port Canaveral Shore Excursions

We are frequently asked about "what to do" while on shore leave in Port Canaveral.  While the cruise ships do a great job at providing several planned shore excursions there are always those cruise passengers that want to do their own thing.
This post features several do-it-yourself activities for Port Canaveral shore excursion adventurers going it alone.
First, the cruise ship terminals aren't really located in a spot that is conducive for simply walking off the ship and starting your adventure.  While the terminals are architectural marvels in their own right and the area is very safe, they are located at the back end of the port where pedestrian traffic is not recommended.  One would simply have to walk too far to get anywhere.  Luckily the taxis are there ready to whisp you anywhere you wish to go.
Places of interest within 10 miles include:
  • Ron Jon Surf Shop and Cocoa Beach Surf Company.  These are two of the largest surf oriented retail stores in the world and they are right next to each other.
  • The beach.  Several public beaches are in the immediate vicinity.  Ask your taxi driver to take you to Cherie Downs or Jetty Park.  These are two of the closest public beaches that also have showers and restrooms.
  • If you want a more local experience, have them drive you a little further to Coconuts on the Beach.  This restaurant/bar is right on the beach and here you'll find that you are probably the only cruise passengers to make it this far from the terminal.
  • The Cocoa Beach Pier.  A historical favorite, the pier has shopping and dining, and you can also get to the beach from here too.
Stay tuned for our next posting about other places of interest beyond 10 miles from the terminal.
